Things to Consider when choosing the best retirement community

By H. Addington

Although the Village has many reasons for being the best retirement community, there are some things that may cause a person to think twice before they retire in the Village. The reasons I have listed is not necessarily mine, but they are some of the reasons I have heard people talking about during my stay in the Village.

As you know, when you live in and near the forest, there is a lot of wild life around. For some people this is good, some don't care one way or another, but there are some people that living close to wild life is not appealing. There are a lot of deer in the Village. There are many other wildlife such as snakes, wild turkeys, foxes, armadillos, a few bears and many other kinds of wildlife. If living with wildlife is a concern, think twice before you decide on the Village as a retirement place.

Along the same reasoning is the bug or insect problem. There are a lot of ticks and chiggers in the village. The ticks are around most of the year, but much worse when the weather gets warm. Chiggers are plentiful during the warm season. They don't bother me but they do bother many people.

The Village has very good roads, but they are all 2 lane roads. Many of the villagers drive slow and this irritates a lot of people, and it does take time to get around in the Village. Most of the speed limits are around 40 mph on the main roads, but some are higher or lower. Just about all the street names are Spanish names and many streets are somewhat alike, such as Aventura Place, Aventura Lane, Aventura Trace ect. This does cause some problems in locating the correct address at times. All in all these problems are not really a major issue with most people.

One of the main drawbacks of living in the Village is the distance that you have to drive to run errands, shop, go to the doctor, ect. There are no large grocery stores in the village. To grocery shop, you either have to go to a store outside one of the main gates or go to Wal-Mart, which is several miles from the west gate on highway 7. There are doctors in the village and there are a few gas stations, but not many. There are some banks inside the Village, but most of them are outside the main gates. There are also a few restaurants inside the Village, but most of the villagers prefer to go outside the Village or go to Hot Springs.

These are some of the problems that I have heard and observed. Since no place is perfect, I believe these are very minor compared to other places. One of the best things about the Village is the people. You will have to go a long way to find any nicer people than the ones who live in the village. Have a happy retirement....
